From baseball star to jailbird in Smart Prison Living
Nov 01, 2017

Smart Prison Living is approaching its premiere date, and promotions have begun with the first few posters being released. The show stars Park Hae-soo (Legend of the Blue Sea) as a prisoner and Jung Kyung-ho (Missing 9) as a prison guard; the black dramedy kicks off when Park, a superstar baseball player, somehow becomes a convicted criminal overnight. In prison, he becomes immersed into another world as he gets to know his inmates and how they ended up in jail.

In the poster above, Park Hae-soo wears a prisoner’s uniform and asks, “This probably isn’t the end of my life…right?” as he passes by Jung Kyung-ho. The same copy is shown in the next poster, featuring Park Hae-soo solo, while the last poster shows him during his superstar pitcher days, where there are two backgrounds juxtaposed of a crowded baseball stadium and a stark prison.

With Answer Me’s PD Shin Won-ho directing, it’s almost guaranteed that Smart Prison Living will be heartwarming. Kyaaah—excited already! Other cast members include Krystal (Bride of the Water God 2017), Jung Hae-in (While You Were Sleeping), Sung Dong-il (The Package), Yoo Jae-myung (Forest of Secrets), and Jung Woong-in (My Sassy Girl).

Wednesday-Thursday drama Smart Prison Living will begin airing on tvN starting November 22, after the end of Buam-dong Revenge Club.

Cast of Nothing to Lose comes together to hold first script reading
Nov 01, 2017

Man, is Yeon Woo-jin having a busy year or what? Upcoming courtroom drama Nothing to Lose will be his third show just this year, including Introverted Boss and Seven Day Queen (♥), and he was also in film The Table, which was released in August, and has Compatibility’s release in the pipeline. Not that I’m complaining, because more Yeon Woo-jin is always a good thing in my book, and with Park Eun-bin (Age of Youth 2) confirmed as his leading lady, my expectations for Nothing to Lose are quite high. I mean, even just their two-shot at the script read is adorable.

Though most legal dramas in dramaland tend to focus on prosecutors, defendants, and defense attorneys, it’ll be interesting to see whether shifting the perspective will give Nothing to Lose a different feel. Both the leads play judges who work in the same district, but are polar opposites in terms of personalities. Park Eun-bin is somewhat of a loose cannon, prone to throwing out swear words and working herself up into a temper, while Yeon Woo-jin’s judge is the level-headed, impartial type. They both get swept up in something bigger than themselves as Park Eun-bin unwittingly picks a fight with some powerful baddies who have framed her brother for a murder he didn’t commit, and then has him murdered.

There’s a mini-Suspicious Partner reunion going on for the new legal drama, with Dongha and Lee Deok-hwa both signed onto the supporting cast to play a father-son pair. Dongha is a hardworking prosecutor who doggedly pursues defendants, while Lee Deok-hwa will play a politician. Lee Deok-hwa’s character is described as a villain role, but we don’t know whether his prosecutor son will also have not-so-noble tendencies. I find it kind of funny how the two actors have switched sides from one legal drama to the next.

Other cast members spotted at the script reading include BESTie’s Haeryung (Star of the Universe), Choi Jung-woo (Legend of the Blue Sea), Woo Hyun (Defendant), and Lee Moon-shik (Wanted). It’s a pretty solid cast, so I’ll be eager to see them inhabit this dramaverse as legal eagles.

Nothing to Lose will follow While You Were Sleeping in SBS’s Wednesday-Thursday slot, and premiere on November 22.

Lee Seung-gi hits the ground running after army discharge
Oct 31, 2017

Puppy’s baaacckkkk!! And we won’t have to wait long to see Lee Seung-gi grace our screens once again, yay! He’s left the army for all of a day (he was discharged on October 31), and according to reports, he’s raring to get back to work. Which is great news for those of us who’ve been awaiting his return eagerly. I mean, some of us have been counting.

First up in the pipeline, of course, is tvN’s upcoming fantasy rom-com Hwayugi. Reports are saying he’s pretty much confirmed, and that the rest of the cast who have already signed on are operating under the assumption that he has all but officially joined the project. Hwayugi marks one of several reunions for Lee Seung-gi: His You’re All Surrounded costar Cha Seung-won is up to play the Bull Demon King, and he’s worked with the Hong sisters before, in My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho. Lee Seung-gi’s role in Hwayugi is Sun Wukong, the mischievous Monkey King who butts heads with Oh Yeon-seo (My Sassy Girl), the monk who holds the key to his locked powers.

There’s also a chance that we may get to see Lee Seung-gi even before Hwayugi premieres in December, on the big screen in the sageuk rom-com Compatibility, which also stars Shim Eun-kyung (The Mayor) and Yeon Woo-jin (Seven Day Queen). Filming for Compatibility wrapped up before Lee Seung-gi enlisted, so it’s kind of amazing that it’s only just coming out now that he’s been discharged.

I’m also eager to see Lee Seung-gi back in variety, as a long-time collaborator (or slave) of Na PD. It would be so awesome to see him reunite with his 1 Night 2 Days hyungs in a new season of New Journey to the West, which would also tie in nicely with his new drama. Though it might be strange to see him not be the youngest of the group with Mino as a cast member.

It’s just really nice to have him back, especially since this is a particularly hard year for enlisting leading men. And also, eager to take on work so quickly after his return: Lee Seung-gi told reporters that he has so much energy and will do so many projects that his fans will have a hard time keeping up with him. You’ve all been warned!

Longing Heart switches broadcast stations, heads to OCN
Oct 31, 2017

Timeslip drama Longing Heart has changed networks: Originally set to broadcast on SBS Plus, now Longing Heart has been picked up by OCN, and will air as an 8-episode drama next year. The webtoon-adapted project stars CNBlue’s Lee Jung-shin (My Sassy Girl), Seo Ji-hoon (School 2017), and Lee Yeol-eum (Monster) as its main love triangle.

Lee Jung-shin plays the main character, a math teacher who never forgot his first love, played by Lee Yeol-eum, from ten years ago. Through a fateful chance, he gets the opportunity to go back in time to when he fell in love with her and woo her all over again. His greatest competition is his younger self, played by Seo Ji-hoon, who seems to be suspicious of his every move.

Although OCN is primarily known for its action thrillers, the cable channel has been venturing into the romance territory this year with rom-com My Secret Romance earlier this year and Meloholic set to premiere next week, which features Yunho and Kyung Su-jin in a mind-reading romance. Longing Heart is a pre-produced drama that finished filming on October 25, from the SBS Plus production team headed by PD Min Yeon-hong, who also created hits like Ugly Alert and Her Lovely Heels. While I haven’t heard the best things about My Secret Romance, I really enjoyed PD Min’s Ugly Alert, so hopefully Longing Heart will be more like the latter.

Fantasy romance Longing Heart will air in the same Monday-Tuesday timeslot as Meloholic; that drama is tentatively scheduled to be followed by supernatural romance That Man Oh-soo, which is currently courting Lee Jong-hyun and Kim So-eun. That puts Longing Heart’s premiere in January; it will also be available via the Oksusu app before the televised broadcast.
